  • The Answers

Can you make me a background?
I'm afraid not. We get far too many requests each day to possibly do requests, although we are more than willing to hear your suggestions. We can alter pre-existing backgrounds for you, though, and we gladly accept donated/submitted backgrounds.

Can you make me a banner?
No -- again, we just get too many requests.

Can you make me a cursor?
Same answer for this as for the previous two questions -- we can't, sorry. However, it's really a simple matter for us to alter pre-existing cursors' colors, so feel free to ask about that.

    Can you make me ...?
Sorry, we simply cannot do custom graphics work. We will gladly consider requests as suggestions, but we cannot guarantee that they will be accepted, made, or placed on the site. The exception to this would be midi music files; read the related FAQ entry for more on that.

What if I pay you to make me something?
We cannot accept payment to do custom work to be used on the NeoPets website or for anything NeoPets-related. It's against their TAC and therefore illegal. However, we may be able to work something out for other uses, like Subeta and some personal and business websites. :)

You don't have the midi song I want. Can you please get it?
You can submit your request via the appropriate email address listed on the
Contact Us page. Please be sure to include the musical artist and song title in your email, otherwise we won't know what you're talking about! If you are looking for a song from a movie, musical, or TV show then include the name of it. If you're looking for a song from a video game, please include the game name and the platform (NES, Xbox, PC, etc.) and the name of the song (if you know it!)

    How does Voters' Pick work?
To submit your background choice for Voters' Pick, simply
email our Support staff with the page number and description of your favorite background on the site. (You only get to vote once per month, so choose wisely!) On the first update of each month, all the votes sent during the previous month will be tallied and the background with the most votes will be placed in Picks for everyone to see and enjoy. The first person who submitted the vote for the winning entry will also win 100,000 SubetaPoints, so be sure to include your Subeta username!

    Do you have full-page backgrounds?
Yes, we do, but they are interspersed with the rest of our backgrounds. Any background with a line of text beneath it stating that the actual size is 800x600 or larger is full-page. Please keep in mind that "full-page" is a subjective term and depends on your screen resolution; the two most common screen resolutions are 800x600 and 1024x768.

My anti-virus program says your cursors are infected! What's going on?
If this glitch is affecting you, you can go
here to download Microsoft's patch for it. Last year, a Trojan was released that took advantage of a weakness in Windows. There was a patch released (see the link above) but a lot of people seem to be bad about downloading updates. Anyway, some anti-virus programs (especially McAfee) feel that ALL animated cursors are a security risk, so you get the warning. Please rest assured that our cursors are 100% clean; they've been scanned multiple times and are made on a totally virus-free and trojan-free system. The problems lie with Microsoft Windows and with these hypersensitive AV programs, not with us. If this is something you're really worried about, just don't use the animated cursors -- stick to the non-animated ones. :)

Help! Why is the NeoPets code filter blocking your codes?
You're probably either using a very, very old code or you've tried using the wrong type of code from our site. The solution is simple: get the updated code and you should be good to go! If you're using a background, be sure you're using a Neo or Neo Modules code and not one of the standard HTML or CSS codes.

Help! Why is Subeta blocking your codes?
For some reason, Subeta recently started blocking all codes that contain "quotation marks." Simply remove all quotation marks from the code after you paste it and all of the graphics will work again.

Why doesn't the "Click to Listen" link work for me?
There was recently an update to Windows Media Player that has rendered it unable to play online MIDIs; there's no fix for this, so we highly recommend that you download Quicktime (it's free) and set it as your default MIDI player. If you're not sure how to edit the defaults on Quicktime, contact our staff and we'll walk you through it.

If you have a player that functions properly, check and see if your speakers are plugged in, receiving power, and turned on. If you pass all of these checks, then contact our Support staff -- we might have made a typo in the link or some other similarly embarassing mistake.

Why won't the midi music play on my site?
It's possible that the site you're on doesn't allow midi music. Subeta is one of these sites, unfortunately. If you're certain that midi music is permitted, try using the alternate code. If that doesn't work, make sure that your computer is equipped to play midis correctly (Windows Media Player recently stopped supporting the online MIDI function) and that your speakers are plugged in and turned on. If it still won't work, contact our Support staff -- it could be a mistake on our end!

Why doesn't the music have words? (Why don't you use MP3s?)
The music doesn't have words because we use .mid (midi) format for our music. While we understand that MP3s are quite popular, we avoid them for a number of reasons. MP3s not only take an extremely long time to load because of large file sizes, but they are also almost always illegal to distribute; if we were to feature MP3s, it could easily result in the shutting-down of our website and a potentially multimillion-dollar lawsuit by the music industry. We do not in any way condone music piracy!

Why can't I see my cursor?
The Firefox browser doesn't support custom cursors, unfortunately. If you're using Internet Explorer and your cursor isn't displaying, then something's wrong; check to make sure you pasted the entire code, and if that doesn't work, notify our staff via email.

Why isn't my Deluxe Mouseover working correctly?
For some reason, some of the Deluxe Mouseovers won't work properly if you are using a semi-transparent table on the page. Unfortunately, there's nothing we can do; you can only use one or the other. Sorry!

Why don't some of your Effects work correctly when I try to use them?
Many effects won't work outside of Internet Explorer 4.0 or higher; If you use an alternate browser, then this may very well be the cause of your problem. If you are using Internet Explorer 4.0 or higher and the desired effect is not functioning as it should, you may have conflicting coding or be using them someplace that doesn't permit CSS. If you'd like assistance, feel free to contact our Support staff!

Why don't you feature pre-made layouts?
There are actually a number of reasons why we do not feature pre-made layouts. The biggest is simply that they're unoriginal and not the least bit creative; we'd much rather give some of the components for you to customise your layouts yourself! It's also a lot more bandwidth/data transfer being taken from the site when entire layouts are being featured on a page, and because people are more likely to steal pre-made layouts, that's unfair to us. There are LOTS of other sites that feature pre-made layouts; why don't you go take a peek at some of our associates' sites?

Can I have an email address @mbif.net?
Actually, yes you can! HOWEVER, you need to know that this will only forward any emails sent to your regular email. For example, if your email address is johndoe1234@hotmail.com and you sign up for johndoe@mbif.net, emails your friend send to johndoe@mbif.net will show up in your hotmail inbox. Still, it's pretty nifty, and you don't have to add lots of silly numbers to the end like you would with other email addresses...mostly because we don't have a few million people utilizing our forwarders. It can be kept simple! Just email us to get started.

Why do I have to leave in the link?
While it is true that we did not make all of the backgrounds/etc. on this site, the user is still legally bound to leave in a link and/or URL code where necessary. The biggest reason you must leave them in is simply because it is a part of the Terms and Conditions, which are legally binding. If you don't agree to the Terms and conditions, then you are not to use this site. Violation of the TAC is illegal and will result in prosecution to the fullest extent possible.

But why is the link required by the Terms and Conditions?
You should know that most online companies charge for provision of backgrounds/etc. when the code is included; we allow you to utilize our service for free as long as you give us proper credit. Also, we store the images on our servers and are limited to a certain amount of space and a certain number of times the contents of our servers may be viewed; overshooting our limits costs us a lot of money, as does the upkeep of the site. By altering the code to eliminate links and tags, you are not only committing a crime by violating the Terms and Conditions, but you are also committing "bandwidth theft," which is illegal. It is possible for us to contact your website provider and have your services shut down for committing this crime; we can (and will) block your site from hotlinking and replace the hotlinked images; it also gives us the right to post your name/username/organization on our Deadbeats Page. We can, if we choose to, also file a lawsuit against you. Really, asking for a little credit for our time and money isn't so much to ask. After all, we are paying real money for you to be able to use our backgrounds, and all we ask in return is a simple mention -- that's a pretty good deal.

I don't like the minibutton included in the code. Can I use something else?
We have a number of minibuttons and full-sized banners you may use to link to the site. Feel free to replace the included minibutton with any of the linking images on the "Link To Us" page.

Can I upload the images or music to my own server and omit the minibutton?
Sorry, but no. If you actually upload the images/music to your own server, however, you can use a small text mention instead or add "Background © mbif.net" to your copyright footers.

Can I use one of your backgrounds as a mouseover effect?
Feel free to, but you must provide a link or URL tag on any page you use it on. You can also email us and we can write up the code for you!

I'm making a layout/graphics site; can I give out codes for your stuff?
No. This is clearly addressed in the Terms and Conditions; our content is not to be displayed in any collections. You also cannot give out our codes on your site. Any sites found doing this will have their webmasters contacted and most likely get shut down. It's fine if you use something of ours for your page's background or cursor (assuming you've left in the credit buttons), but if you want your visitors to view our stuff then you'll have to direct them here.

Why don't you make backgrounds and stuff using Neopets?
Because of this: "NEOPETS, characters, logos, names and all related indicia are trademarks of Neopets, Inc., © 1999-2006. ® denotes Reg. US Pat. & TM Office. All rights reserved." It would be highly illegal; we would get sued and shut down, and we don't want that. We respect copyrights, trademarks, and the like.

Why don't your instructions explain how to use stuff on specific websites besides Subeta?
Mostly for legal reasons. We've had a lawsuit threat by a major corporation, due at least in part to our placing instructions for using our backgrounds on member pages of their site. If you have problems figuring it out on your own, feel free to contact our staff -- we'd be happy to help privately :)

Will you please display my link?
That depends on a number of factors. All sites we link to must be child-safe and not promote hate, violence, discrimination, x-rated/adult content, or illegal activities (including but not limited to hacks, cheats, copyright infringement, etc.) We prefer sites that have their own domains, but those without may also be considered. If your site meets all of those requirements, we can either do a link exchange or you can purchase advertising with us.

Can you explain the link exchange system?
Absolutely! If you place one of our 88x31 linking minibuttons on your site, we'll place one of your 88x31 minibuttons on our Links page. You might also get a text link in our news for a short period of time. This is completely free, but your exposure is slightly limited and we will only use 88x31 buttons. You'll get much more exposure (and more traffic) if you purchase adspace. Still, this is an excellent deal -- free is good! Email us to set up a link exchange.

    So, how do I advertise?
Sites wishing to advertise with us must meet the
terms and pass a visual inspection. We accept USD via PayPal, with packages starting at just $5 per month. If you are interested, be sure to stop by our Advertising page!

What's the deal with the ads, anyway?
The costs to run this site are nearly a thousand dollars yearly, not including software, hardware, consultations, staff rewards, or time. It's expensive and the ads merely help soften the blow somewhat. This really isn't any different than the advertising you find on free hosts like Bravenet or Yahoo, except that we can provide our users with much better speed, content, and assistance. Additionally, we are able to help a lot of new websites this way by giving them traffic. Please note that not everyone will see ads, as certain filtering software can block the displays; we do not recommend such software as it may alter the site layout and disturb your browsing experience.
